Underhill Road, East Dulwich

Stylish and substantial four bedroom semi-detached home on one of East Dulwich’s fanciest streets, on the Forest Hill border. If the house seems familiar, that’s probably because it’s had a long and successful chunk of life as a (photography and film) shoot-house; there are a few major giveaways such as the cookery-show kitchen and vast master bedroom with bath. The proportions are fantastic (it feels even larger than its 2000-odd square feet) and the garden is over 100ft and beautifully-zoned. Luxury, non-run-of-the-mill features include off street parking for two, a large roof terrace, and a huge garden studio. Forest Hill Station is your closest (about 15 mins by foot). Freehold. Chain free.

A large hall welcomes you from the front door. The formal reception room sits to the front of the house (take a right from the hall), at over 13ft by over 11ft, and with plantation shutters to the sash windows. The scheme is neutral, as throughout; accentuating the natural light that the house impresses with. This room, the hall, and the dining area beyond has pale carpet underfoot. The open-plan style dining room has a bank of huge and high built-in cupboards that blend well. If you preferred, you could use this area of the property as a playroom or second seating area, as what lies beyond is a big kitchen/dining room with wall-spanning folding doors out to the garden. You’ve a handsome bank of fitted wall and base units, plus high-end, built-in appliances and two islands (one is fixed, the other is mobile). Out to the mature and established garden and you’ll first find a large decked area. Travel to the end of the garden to find a noteworthy outbuilding that would suit all manner of uses.

Up to the first floor and the master suite takes the width of the house at over 19ft (by 11ft). Two sash windows offer leafy street views and under these, sit classy old school style radiators (more lovely plantation shutters feature too – and yes – they are staying!). A second and generous double is next door and these two rooms adjoin (you could easily change this and go for a cupboard here instead). This second bedroom has the advantage of double doors out to the huge sun deck. A large and double-aspect family bathroom completes the floor with modern white suite and overbath shower. Up again to the second floor for two further double bedrooms. One has an en suite shower room and both have built-in wardrobes.

This is a lovely and particularly leafy patch of south London, very close to beautiful Horniman Gardens and Museum. Forest Hill Station is a short, pleasant walk, or stride a little further to Honor Oak Park Station (both offer mainline services and London Overground ones, too). Alternatively, jump on a bus for East Dulwich or Peckham Rye stations.

Kids? Local schools include Goodrich, Horniman and Fairlawn (Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ and Outstanding’). There are plenty of fine independent schools within a short drive also. Lordship Lane is a short stroll for shops, bars, restaurants and things to do (we like Dulwich Picturehouse, William Rose butchers, Franklins and The Cheese Block a great deal), as is central Forest Hill with leisure centre and a good Sainsbury’s store. Dulwich Village is also close for more options.
