Machell Road, Nunhead

Delightful four double bed, two bath terraced house of 1338 square feet; built circa 1875 - and now incorporating a deftly-done, storage-hefty loft conversion (which was completed in 2019).

Find the lovely home - and its front and rear gardens - on a quiet residential Nunhead street (driving lesson territory!) with pretty Victorian street lamps, close to Nunhead Green Conservation Area; which takes in Nunhead’s well-stocked independent high street and village-style green.

Parking is unrestricted - on-street, and you’re but a four minute walk from Nunhead Station. Or walk 12 minutes to Queens Road Peckham Station for added Overground trains (also Fare Zone 2). Freehold.

The house has solar panels which generate about 3000 kilowatt hours a year of electricity - which is handily about what an average three bed house uses! Other welcome features include underfloor heating to both bathrooms; and Terazzo bathroom floors from Diespeker & Co. (an old Peckham firm). The pretty established rear garden is home to pear, apple, plum and fig trees - heaven!

A neat front garden sets the house back from the street. Into the hall and a large through-reception is on your right - stretching over 21 feet, with wood-burning stove to the front reception area, and smart solid-wood floors.

At the foot of the hall you’ve a guest w.c. then the large and lovely double-aspect kitchen/dining room which extends over 21 feet, with big bay window providing a natural dining area. The fitted kitchen’s a modern gloss style, paired with solid wood counters (plenty of counter space).

Upstairs from the half-landing you’ve got a double bedroom with sash window to garden views, and the main (windowed) bathroom with contemporary white suite, over-bath shower and recessed lighting.

From the main landing you have another double (over 10 feet by over 9) and the master across the front - an impressive 15 feet by over 10, with two south-facing windows.

The second floor’s a real treat with an independent shower room plus huge double bedroom with skylights and Juliet balcony (and loads of accessible eaves storage - ooh, there’s another loft storage area too - between the two bathrooms that’s reached from the ladder hatch on the first floor landing outside the bathroom).

Nunhead station has London Victoria trains and Thameslink trains as well (Farringdon, Blackfriars). It also puts on an impressive skyline view from the platform! Or you can walk 12 minutes to Queens Road Peckham station (also Fare Zone 2) for London Overground services. Canary Wharf is easy via Canada Water, also destinations such as Clapham Junction or Shoreditch High Street.

Nunhead has a relaxed vibe, with central green, playground and community centre (by AOC architects), and excellent established staples which include Ayre’s bakery and Soper’s wet-fish shop. New and popular arrivals include El Vermut, The Beer Shop, Goodcup, Babette, and Four Hundred Rabbits (posh pizza).

The Old Nun’s Head is a reliable local and often has live music, guest ales etc. Walk just 10 minutes to Consort Road and the hottest table in town - any one of them you can get a booking on - at Peckham Bazaar.

Central Peckham and cool Rye Lane is a 15 minute walk, for such delights as Peckham Levels, and The Bussey Building & Copeland Park complex, plus Market Building and Peckham Plex cinema. Walk another 5 minutes to Bellenden Road with its independent high street and lovely shops, cafes and restaurants like Artusi, Ganapati, Anderson’s, Flock & Herd and Review book store.

It’s a short stroll to Telegraph Hill's gorgeous parks with views and a weekly Farmers’ Market (Saturdays from 10am) and also Peckham Rye Park and Common’s 113 acres. Locally, Nunhead Cemetery is a beautiful Victorian one - one of ‘The Magnificent Seven’ - with organised tours, and beautiful big trees and views!

For more options, Peckham, Camberwell, New Cross, Deptford, Brockley and Greenwich are all but a short journey. Little ones? Really locally, Banana Moon Day Nursery is well-liked, as is Edmund Waller Primary School.
